(IT-NEWSWIRE.COM, April 29, 2015 ) Boston, MA -- Over 22 million Americans as young as 12 years old were in need of substance abuse treatment, however only a select percentage received help. Despite the fact that many addicts have tried to seek help, only about 10 percent of the individuals who qualified as having a substance abuse or dependence problem have received treatment. According to SAMSHA, in 2013 about 323,200 people reported that they attempted to seek treatment for their substance abuse problem but couldn't.

Groups such as Not In My Back Yard (NIMBY) are especially fighting back against addiction treatment centers in their neighborhoods. Members of NIMBY have expressed that they don't want criminals or drug users in their neighborhood to avoid putting their families and homes in jeopardy.
Addiction is a disease, however people like NIMBY members are treating it like a plague. However, no evidence has been presented to confirm an increase in violence or crime in neighborhoods that house addiction treatment centers. One treatment clinic director lashed back at NIMBY members with his comment, ""Never mind your backyard. [Addiction is] probably in your living room. You just haven't figured it out yet."

The associate commented "With overdose deaths increasing annually, people should be advocating for more addiction treatment centers versus opposing them in their neighborhoods. One of these protesters could have a loved one in need of treatment who's being turned away because of their protesting. More people should advocate for increased addiction treatment centers in Boston and all across the nation. If we all come together more lives could be saved."
