Back To Bendgate: The Sequel. Samsung S6 Edge Follows In The Footsteps Of IPhone 6 Plus.

Square Trade's Bend Tests

(IT-NEWSWIRE.COM, May 06, 2015 ) London, UK -- New revelations about the build quality of Samsung Galaxy S6 phones have put the old iPhone 6 Plus 'bendgate' saga back at the forefront of smartphone discussions.

It turns out that actually the iPhone 6 Plus is not so bendy after all. At least not compared to the latest S6 Edge offering from Samsung it seems.

The ‘catastrophic failings' of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge have been demonstrated in a shocking new YouTube clip (as shown below), which shows bending and shattering irreparably under pressure. The iPhone 6 Plus faced the same conditions and managed to survive 179lbs of pressure prior to catastrophic failure, compared to the Samsung's S6 Edge's 149lbs limit. Both showed identical initial bending at 110lbs but were still able to operate fully.

(IIB) Initial Irreversible Bend
(CF) Catastrophic Failure
iPhone 6 Plus – 110lbf IIB – 179lbf CF
HTC One M9 120lbf IIB – 120lbf CF
Galaxy S6 Edge – 110lbf IIB – 149lbf CF

It is perhaps only highlighted to such a degree as Samsung declared aggressively at launch of the S6 and S6 edge that the devices would not bend like ‘some other phablets'. This was not a good move.

Accessory manufacturers have once again stepped into the debate. A spokesperson for Boom Products, the company behind the acclaimed "Shock-2*" case, currently available for the iPhone 6 and Plus and coming soon for the S6, commented, "With devices becoming larger and thinner there is going to be a point where something has to give. Even extended pressure at lower forces than we see here has been shown in some tests to permanently bend some larger smartphones such as the iPhone 6 Plus. If this is actually a concern it is a reason to get a solid case to avoid the issue. It is perhaps not realistic that devices coming in as thin as 5mm are not going to be tested beyond their natural flex in some circumstances."

Samsung have since responded to the tests saying with a full statement in which they claim that the tests do not replicate real world circumstances and that a normal user will only usually exert 66lbf on a handset. The issue might not go away that easily however. Square Trade's bend test video alone has reached approximately 2.2 million hits so far.
