(IT-NEWSWIRE.COM, May 10, 2015 ) Philadelphia, PA -- It is unclear why there has been a sudden surge of deadly synthetic marijuana overdoses. In a time span of less than 7 days, over 50 people from the Lehigh Valley areas of Bethlehem and Allentown has to be hospitalized with K-2 related overdose injuries. K-2 is a type of synthetic marijuana that is created with dangerous chemicals which mimics the properties of real marijuana.
Lehigh County District Attorney James Martin stated "The green leafy matter in these packets may appear to be innocuous. However, it has been sprayed with chemical compounds that are hazardous. There is no way for a user to know exactly what chemical compound has been sprayed on the synthetic marijuana."
Doctors from two Lehigh Valley Health Network Hospitals have reported that they have had to treat symptoms including fever, delirium, agitation, and a host of other symptoms that are induced by use of synthetic marijuana. Doctors also reported that they have had to restrain patients by strapping them down for the patients safety and to effectively treat patients,
Thus far the patients who have received treatment for synthetic marijuana overdose have ranged between the ages of 13 and 60 years old. Officials are unclear on whether Lehigh Valley residents have been consuming a bad batch of the marijuana or if there has been an increase in synthetic marijuana usage.
Drug Rehab Philadelphia medical associate comments "The danger that synthetic marijuana imposes on our society should be grounds for the ban of sale for these products. Synthetic marijuana is sold in stores and is easily accessible to young teens. This product needs to be taken off of store shelves. The start of the synthetic marijuana epidemic must cease before it grows into something bigger.
