According to the key findings stated in this report, Asia-Pacific is the current leading region for adoption of FTTH/B-based broadband services with an approximate total of 117.4m lines in 2014. This region now comprises 68% of the global broadband lines in the world. Taking into account the total market estimations for 2014, FTTH/B comprises around 34% of the region’s broadband services and will further account for more than half by the end of 2018.
The report identifies 3 main approaches to network deployment in Asia-Pacific. These includes public-private partnerships, service-provider-led deployments, and government-led deployments. Among these, the public-private partnerships and government-led deployments results in open-access networks. These two models are expected to lead the future wave of growth in FTTH/B broadband lines in this region.
China presents the largest FTTH/B services deployment scale in Asia and is expected to reach 200M homes by 2015. In addition, other regions such as Japan, Hong Kong, and Korea have also witnessed the highest penetrations for FTTH/B. South Korea and Hong Kong regions enjoys the world’s highest household penetration rates, together accounting for more than 60 percent of broadband subscriptions, including Japan. Beginning in 2000, Japanese incumbent NTT was the first operator in the FTTH/B services market in Asia-Pacific to invest in networking.
