(IT-NEWSWIRE.COM, August 19, 2015 ) London, UK -- Despite acclaimed director, Spike Lee's, impassioned statement that watching movies on smartphones is ‘heart-breaking' to those in the industry, recent research has shown that more people are now watching movies and digital TV content on phones and tablets in bed, than on televisions.
A 2013 survey by Motorola was the first to show that digital viewing had reached a par with more traditional mediums, but the advancement of compact smart devices with crystal clear screens, such as the Apple iPhone 6 Plus, and the vast improvement of broadband speed and WIFI technology, has seen TV streaming and movie downloads skyrocket in the last 18 months.
While convenience and control are key elements in this growth of digital viewing, appealing vastly to the ‘on-demand' generation, there is, perhaps, one other reason for the increase – comfort.
As little as 12-18 months ago, viewing content on a mobile device meant holding it in your hand. While this might be fine for a five minute YouTube clip, it wasn't really practical for a 30 minute television show, or a two hour movie, let alone a 202 minute beast of a film, like Lee's much-admired Malcom X. As for sharing the experience, it really was a no-go.
The development of high-spec mobile phone cases with kick-stands, such as the Boom Shock-2, has been as much of a boon to the digital downloaders as the advancement of the devices. With an hybrid two-piece design, the Boom Shock-2 for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus has been applauded for its protection, secure grip, and amplified corner protection.
However, what's really grabbed the attention of users is the sturdy, in-built kickstand. As one reviewer recently said; as the stand is built into the case, it can't be lost, and made from sturdy polycarbonate, it's not easily broken. It has proven a massive draw for customers… And perhaps tempted even more users into watching movies on their phones – sorry Spike!
Still, it's not all bad news for Spike Lee – while he might prefer it if we all watched every film released at the cinema, it seems that smartphone and tablet users watch more TV and movies than those who don't, so although we might not get the nuances of the editing, lighting and sound, that Spike and co ‘kill themselves over', at least we are watching what they've produced!
