The spike is to be expected as Lightning is a new technology, replacing the nearly decade old 30-pin dock connector first introduced with the third-generation iPod."

Kuo also believes that in comparison with the microUSB cable that most Android devices use, the Lightning cable's specs are higher. The 8 pins of the Lightning connector dedicate 4 contacts for data transfer, 2 for accessories, one for power and another for ground. Apple is likely to be using this cable format for the next 5 to 10 years.

People are advised to store and use the lightning cable properly to avoid breakage and damage. There are individuals who buy the cables in bulk just so they don't have to go back to the Apple store every month.
