4-Legger, an e-commerce retail business, has strategically partnered with Amazon to grow the 4-Legger brand, citing the need to bring more truly natural and environmentally friendly products to the pet industry.
The pet industry has no regulations for labeling and listing ingredients on products, making it difficult for consumers to make educated choices. No labeling requirements means that manufacturers of pet grooming products can make claims such as natural or organic without having to meet standards.
Products that are USDA Certified Organic to Food Standards must comply with strict ingredient standards set by the Department of Agriculture, ensure the quality of their ingredients, and maintain manufacturing guidelines.
Michael Green, Executive Director of The Center for Environmental Health (CEH) states that, "Most people believe that products sold in major stores are tested for safety, but consumers need to know that they could be doused with a cancer causing chemical every time they shampoo." The same principle applies to pets. Many of the ingredients in pet shampoos can cause dry and itchy skin, may contain known carcinogens, neuro-toxins and immuno-suppressants. These ingredients may contribute to health risks for dogs and their owners.
Dr. Patrick Mahaney of PetMD states, "The skin is the body's largest organ so there's definite potential for any substance applied to the surface, whether intentionally or accidentally to be absorbed and cause toxicity in the body."
